Bird Flu: In the Wind, HHS Releases More Funds to Fight Pandemics.

In the latest release from the Health and Human services, Secretary Mike Leavitt announced more funding to states. The reason cited is to bump up or strengthen our ability to handle influenza events. In the recent months, we have seen more concern for these pandemics. The paramount event or pandemic that is cited is the Bird flu. Recent developments as well have seen a dramatic Bird Flu epidemic in Germany where tens of thousands of Birds were slaughtered to prevent the spread.

Mike Leavitt said in the release to the public that the “additional funding will provide our nation’s health care community with a means to continue planning, training and acquiring needed equipment for an effective pandemic response.” Further it was stated that this funding will keep the momentum going that the nation has seen to be prepared in this arena. The arena of public pandemic and health, where concerns over the mutation of the Bird flu virus is seen as a viable threat to human life, where there is no known cure today.

The press release went on to say this funding that is in addition to other monies received by states will be used to:
* Establish or enhance stockpiles of critical medical equipment and supplies.
* Continue development of plans for maintenance, distribution and sharing of those resources.
* Plan for and develop pandemic alternate care sites.
* Conduct medical surge exercises.

Moreover, the government is always on a ready basis. Here we see legislation that the Bush administration has pushed down the throats of the American public. Congressman Ron Paul Interviewed on the Alex Jones show spoke about what he called the “Insurrection act” which would open the door to a declared state of national emergency. This emergency would bring about as the Congressman cited as “martial law”. The reasons many see, including the Congressman is that any civil disobedience, economic downturn that would threaten stability of the US, or possibly the arrival of a pandemic so great that the security of our nation would be in jeopardy. Congressman Ron Paul further told Alex Jones that “If in 6 months or a year there is total chaos who knows what they might try to do”.

Bird flu has been increasingly in the news. In a recent Discovery show over cable, called Dirty Jobs, with Mike Rowe, the job entailed going to the remote access of the north. It was here during breakup, that time when snow melts and the ground loses it frost, that the Canadian geese, snow geese, and others are checked for the Bird flu. The officials on the show revealed that the samples from 100 plus birds are sent to a special health lab associated with the Feds and will be checked for the specified virus H5N1.

Today, America is ill equipped to handle such a virus. Experts from the Government do have some antidotes or virus killers they want to use on this H5N1, but the trouble is, none works right now. The virus has not actually mutated to humans yet. Those people, who do come down with it, do by getting it from being in contact with the birds. The pandemic the government is working to prepare for will be one that will have a virus, started in the Bird population, then spread to other animals, and finally to humans. When it reaches human infection on a high level, the disease will be spread through the air. It will also be transmitted by touch and surfaces like the cold or flu. That’s right just like the old flu pandemics where many were infected and then ended up dying from it, the new strain of Bird flu will do the same. The trouble is when the strain arrives this way the anti-serum will not be ready yet. Even though some government sources say publicly that there is an anti-serum, don’t believe them. You cannot have such a weapon to fight a virus when the virus has not shown up yet.

The other trouble with this H5N1 is when it hits, the virus can stay alive on surfaces, doorknobs, counter tops, for up to seven days. Many others die after a short time, but this one stays communicable for along time compared to the standard viruses we have. An expert on this, whom shall remain private, told me that “the President would declare a national emergency” because this will be so bad. After he does this, “people will be in their homes, in isolation”. “The Hospitals will be full, they will then need to take over schools, auditoriums, and other large areas for makeshift hospitals, further adding, this virus will be so bad, people will need to get in hospitals for treatment.” Entire cities, commerce, and the nation will be virtually at a standstill. This coming pandemic is so bad, when it arrives, millions will die. The third world will be hit the hardest, but America will suffer with the rest. Other sources have mentioned that the “government already has been working on getting extra makeshift hospital space readied”. With all the preparations, somebody is indeed worried that this will hit and very soon.

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced that the Department is making
available another $75 million to states, territories and four
metropolitan areas to help strengthen their capacity to respond to a
pandemic influenza outbreak.

“The additional funding will provide our nation’s health care community
with a means to continue planning, training and acquiring needed
equipment for an effective pandemic response,” Secretary Leavitt said.
“It will also help keep the momentum we have generated over the past
year in this important public health area.”

The supplemental funding will be used to:

* Establish or enhance stockpiles of critical medical equipment and supplies,
* Continue development of plans for maintenance, distribution and sharing of those resources.
* Plan for and develop pandemic alternate care sites.
* Conduct medical surge exercises.

The one-time pandemic influenza response planning grants will supplement
the $430 million HHS announced on June 28, 2007, to strengthen the
ability of hospitals and other health care facilities to respond to
bioterror attacks, infectious diseases, and natural disasters that may
cause mass casualties.
